| 10/06/2009 | Full Day Tuna Trip Weather has been a problem for the last 2 weeks causing cancellation of several canyon trips. Tuesday was a window between storms that we were able to use. Reports from the trawler fleet that BFT were back in the area and a little larger in size sent us SE again at 4:30 AM. Skys clear but sea 3-5 and wind still 15-20, but everything was suppose to settle down, which it did. Set up behind first trawler we saw, 10 minuts later fish on. A healthy 100# went into the cooler, but the bite continued. When we didn't get a bite for 15 min went up a started another drift and we were back into fish. The trawlers left but other fishing boats joined us, which probably kept the fish around. 6 guys with 3 and 4 100# fish on at a time kept every one very busy. When we were chunking, we were able to use lighter tackel which prolonged the fights and increase the chance for break offs. Ended the day with 18 fish to the boat all but 2 released and another 20 breaks offs. Had a few problems with some large blue sharks chasing the tuna but it was all fun. Unbelievable fishing again and alot closer then the canyon. |
| 09/23/2009 | Full Day Tuna Trip Instead of heading to canyon tried to catch BFT again. Skys were not as clear and the wind was up to 10MPH but the fish didn't care. Left dock around 4:30. Went to the same area, found the same trawler fleet, and set up chunking right away. Similar results with a little larger fish. Biggest fish weighed in at 103# and 59", a total of 17 for the day. All but 2 released using circle hooks. Another fun and tiring day for the charter. |
| 09/21/2009 | Full Day Tuna Trip Reports of Blue Fin Tuna SE of inlet proved true. Left dock at 3:00 AM to be in trawler area at 7:00. Found 6 trawlers working a tight 2 mile square area. Winds was calm and the sky was clear. Started trolling and had a small BFT right away so we set up chunking. Half hour later we were into 60-80# fish. With 6 guys fishing some one was always fighting a fish and most times 2 were on at once. All fish were caught on circle hooks and after keeping a 44" and 56", all fish were released in good condition. Ended up bring 26 fish to boat. Home by 5:00 PM exhausted. |
| 07/25/2009 | Shark Trip Beautiful day, some haze but light wind, seas calm except for 4' gentle smell. Left dock at 6:30 headed for shark area south east of San Diego. Enroute ran into feeding shearwaters, dropped a line to find large blue fish, 10-12#, feeding. Caught a few for chunks and headed off. Got to shark area to find several boats already chumming. In looking for open area came across splashing bait. Casted a jig from a spinning rod and we were off. 20 minutes later had a 40 inch Blue Fin Tuna on the deck. Started chumming. Plenty of porpoises ran under us all day but no sharks. Home by 5:00. |
| 07/22/2009 | Full Day Fluke Left dock late, 11:00 AM. We combined fishing with dinner at Matthews on Fire Island. Headed for the ocean, seas calm, sun shining and breeze mild. Fish in 70' of water south of Cherry Grove. Over 20 fish caught all over 17" most over 20 but only 1 made the cut, 22 1/2". What really made the day was the occassional 10# plus Blue Fish that gave the anglers a great fight on the light fluke rod. Tied up at Matthews at 5:00 home by 7:30. |
| 07/20/2009 | Full Day Fluke Left dock at 8:00 AM started drifting at the bridge, plenty of short action and found the magic keeper 23" around 10:30. Continued to drift from the bridge to the inlet and back. Sea Robins and short Fluke kept every happy and busy. |
| 07/17/2009 | Full Day Fluke Left dock at 8:00 AM for ocean fluking. Went right to off shore reef in hopes of finding some big ones and a few Sea Bass. The action was slow. We drifted every piece of rubble, only to lose a half a dozen rigs and found 1, 11" Sea Bass and 12 fluke to 20". Ended the day south of head bouy in 60' of water with lively short fluke action 12-17". |
| 07/13/2009 | Shark Trip Warm, clear and a light NW wind. We leave at 6:30 for the same area that has produced for the last 2 days. But things are different, we start with almost no drift that becomes no drift after about 2 hours. We see whales in the area but its not until 11:00 that we get a SW wind that moves us. Although there have been alots of birds eating our chum for the last 2 days they were not a problem and mostly the small black and white tuna chicks but today we are surrounded by stavage shearwaters. It is almost impossible to get a chunk past them. We tried throwing the chunks under the boat with hopes that by the time they birds attack them they would be too deep. That didn't realy help much, they just dove deeper, so we started chunking realy heavy. By 2:30 we were out of chunks and paisence and ready to go hme when the top line takes off. A small 4 1/2 blue shark, tagged and released. While putting lines back in the blue fish fillet takes off. The battle startes and we bring a 5' Mako to the boat. A little too small so she is tagged and released. Lines go back out for the end of the chum but nothing else bites. A long day that ends with action is a good day. |
| 07/12/2009 | Shark Trip A warm day with moderate seas that diminished with time. We left the dock at 8:15 and head east again to the same area as yesterday. Lines in by 10:30 but nothing in the morning. As the weather improved and the drift slowed we figured we went to the wrong spot when a small Mako, about 70#, swims in and is hand baited on a light rod. Tagged and release happy, we put the line back out and the top line takes off. The fish is hooked and fought to the boat to find another 130# Mako. This fight isn't as easy and the fish tries to tangle in the wheels. With the help of a strong arm and a push stick he is freed, gaffed and tail tied, but doesn't go crazy until he is in the boat. Even having him streched and tied didn't stop the mayheam for 10 minutes. Now it's almost 2:00 and large, 15# plus blue fish move in to eat our baits and chum. 3:00 it's time to head in. |
| 07/11/2009 | Shark Trip Started late, 7:45 and headed east to 160 foot a water. Lines in by 10:00. First shark on at 10:35. A strong fighting Brown Shark, about 170#, gave us hopes for a busy day, but that was it until 2:30 when a Blue Shark nosed our chum pot and was hand baited, tagged and released. Then a big splash, short run and another splast ended in a cut line. 10 minutes later another run off resulted in another 6 foot Blue Shark. Getting ready to call it a day and we get a strike while bring in the first line, all lines cleared while we fight a 120 pound Mako. Once gaffed and tied across cockpit we ended the day. |
| 07/09/2009 | 1/2 Day Fluke Morning trip started at 7:00 Am in cloudy weather with weather reports for sunshine by noon but it only got colder. Started drifting in the inlet for a few shorts then headed to head bouy where we were mobbed by sea robins. The seas were too rocky to stay so we headed back inside and worked the bars and edges back to the bridge. A slow pick of short fluke to 18 inches was all we could find. |
| 06/14/2009 | Shark Trip Left the dock at 7:00 AM in cloudy skies and mist. Wind on the land was calm but off shore a good 5-10 E/SE breeze was blowing. Headed for the Virgina Wreck ended up starting our drift 5 miles west in 155 foot of water. Lines in for 5 minutes and had a Blue fish chop up a bait but they disappeared and the Blue Sharks started. Size ranged from 60 to 180 pounds. We had 3 on at a time several times. Ended the day with 25 Blue Sharks all released and some tagged until we ran out of tags.
